May 13 Crop Progress: Corn Nearly 1/3 Planted, Soybean Planting Lagging

Farmers across corn-producing states made decent progress in the last week, going from 12% planted on May 5 to 28% of the overall corn crop planted by May 12. This is still well behind the five-year average of 65% planted.

May 6, 2013 Crop Progress Report: Corn 12% Planted, Soybean Planting Started

Corn planting progressed a bit last week, moving up 7 points from the week before to 12% planted overall. The five-year average is 47% planted, and last year the overall corn planting progress was 69% at this time.

North Carolina and Texas have the most corn in the ground at 89% and 70% completed so far, and slightly behind the five-year averages for each state.

Corn Planting Progress Slow; 5% Planted Overall

The latest Crop Progress Report from USDA puts overall corn planted at just 5%. This is only 1 point ahead of last week, and is 26 points behind the five-year average. (Is it necessary to mention that last year nearly half of the overall corn crop was in the ground? Probably not.)

Farm Transition Planning: Communicate, Use Experts, Keep Focused

On Friday afternoon attendees at Commodity Classic 2013 were treated to a session on transitioning their farms. Leading the conversation were Darren Frye, Brian Hensley and Arlen Suderman, all of Water Street Solutions, and Bryce Knorr, of Farm Futures. The group started off by saying that now is the time to start planning, reminding the group that having a will and having and estate plan are NOT transition plans.

Commodity Classic 2013: Transition, Marketing, Agvocating, Palm Trees & Rock-and-Roll

Commodity Classic 2013 was held in Kissimmee, Fla. There were many educational sessions for farmers, from soybean secrets to transitioning the farm, new-product introductions to marketing plans. The general session captivated all attendees, offering viewpoints from commodity groups and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. There was fun with all the learning, too. World Classic Rockers provided entertainment, and palm trees provided a beautiful view. And don't forget about the trade show with exhibitors from all areas of agriculture. If you weren't there, here's a quick recap of a busy, informative, warm three days.

Vilsack Champions Agriculture, Farmers, Rural America, Stresses Need for Farm Bill, End to Sequester 4

Secretary of Agriculture spoke to a group of over 1,500 farmers and ranchers at Commodity Classic in Kissimmee, Fla., this morning. He championed America's farmers for their willingness to conserve and be sustainable as well as their efforts to build rural America.

2012 Corn, Soybean Yields 2

With harvest complete, we've polled farmers for what their final yields ended up being for corn and soybeans, as a percentage of normal. Taking numbers from the comments on the poll, we've mapped out final yields across the Corn Belt. We'd love to get more numbers, so feel free to leave a comment here with your final average corn and soybean yields and we'll add them to our maps.

Sept. 10 Crop Progress: Corn Harvest Progressing, Soybean Harvest Starts

The 2012 corn harvest continues to progress, with all major corn-producing states harvesting except Wisconsin. The corn condition held steady across all categories in the past week. Farmers have begun harvesting soybeans now, just barely ahead of the average pace. Soybean condition gained a couple points in the good/excellent category in the past seven days.

2012 Harvest

The 2012 harvest is underway. We caught up with Dohling Farms in Nicollet County, Minnesota, the weekend after Labor Day as they were harvesting corn. They had some corn that had hail damage, but was yielding as expected. In the area, some farmers were seeing 30 bu./acre on corn that was planted to sandy ground, and more than 200 bu./acre on better soils. We'd love to see photos of your harvest! Email them to csd@csdigest.com, and we'll post them to the gallery.

Aug. 27 Crop Progress: Corn Harvest Slowly Progresses, Soybeans Dropping Leaves

Nearly all corn has reached dough stage, and nearly all soybeans have set pods. As corn harvest begins, the corn crop condition lost another point in good/excellent condition. Soybeans are starting to drop leaves, and overall soybean condition also lost a point in good/excellent condition.

Aug. 20 Crop Progress: Corn Harvest Starts; Soybeans Dropping Leaves

With almost one-fifth of the corn crop reaching maturity, and over half of the overall crop denting, the corn harvest has started. As of Aug. 20, 4% of the 2012 corn crop has been harvested. Four percent of the soybean crop is dropping leaves, and overall soybean condition gained a point in the good-to-excellent rating category.

Aug. 13 Crop Progress: Corn Good-Excellent Ratings Hold Steady; Soybean Ratings Gain a Point

As the crops progress into August with 10% of the overall corn crop reaching maturity at this point, the conditions have held steady for a week. The overall corn crop has stayed at 23% good-excellent, and the overall soybean crop actually gained a point in that category, reaching 30%.

July 30 Crop Progress: Corn Denting, Soybeans Podding, Crop Conditions Decline Less

Corn and soybean crop conditions declined over the past week, but nearly as much as they have in past weeks. Both crops lost only 2 points in the good/excellent ratings. Growing progress continues for both crops. Corn is denting in two-thirds of the states, and over one-third of the overall crop has reached dough stage. Soybeans are nearly bloomed in all states, and over half of the overall crop is setting pods.

July 23 Crop Progress: Corn, Soybean Development Ahead of Normal, Conditions Continue Decline

The corn crop is reaching dent stage in 10 states and is at dough stage in all but one of the major corn-producing states. The soybean crop continues ahead-of-average blooming, and over one-third of the overall crop is setting pods. As both crops continue ahead-of-normal development, conditions continue to slip.

2012 Yield Estimates

We recently asked what farmers were expecting for crop yields this year. The poll so far shows that most are expecting to see 50-75% of what their usual average yield is. Some will see little to no yield in the middle of the Corn Belt, while those to the north are expecting a little closer to average. We put together some maps and data to show what farmers are expecting around the Corn Belt. These numbers are taken from the poll comments. If you have an estimation, leave a comment here and we'll add it to our maps.
