Give #foodthanks This Thanksgiving and Holiday Season

Thanksgiving is upon us, and, like every year, there's much to be thankful for. Sure, Mother Nature probably isn't high on your list, but you know who should be? Farmers. It's time to take to Twitter, folks, and give some #foodthanks to those in agriculture for doing their part to provide us with the items we purchase at the grocery store, the dinner on our tables, the snacks we pack for our kids.

Since 2010, AgChat Foundation has looked to social media users (specifically those on Twitter and now on Pinterest) to use the hashtag #foodthanks to share their appretiation for food and those who provide it.

“For the third year in a row, we are taking time during the holidays to inspire conversation about an appreciation for the food we eat and the people who produce it,” says Darin Grimm, president of the AgChat Foundation. “Social media platforms provide a space for voices from the whole food system to be expressed, not just voices from agriculture.”

The official website for #foodthanks,, will take you to either Pinterest or Twitter to begin using the hashtag and adding to the conversation. Last year, more than 1,000 people shared 3,112 tweets using #foodthanks in the time leading up to Thanksgiving. The goal for this year is 1,000 followers on Pinterest and to surpass last year’s number of tweets.

“The campaign is kicking off right now, in conjunction with the holidays, but #foodthanks is something that can continue year-round,” says Emily Zweber, executive director of AgChat Foundation.

So pull up that dusty Twitter account, log in to your favorite time suck (what I like to refer to Pinterest as! Don't get me wrong, I love it, but once you log on, it's easy to get stuck there for a while.) and give some #foodthanks to those who help put meals on your table, and to those folks who put together delicious recipes.

Not sure how to use Twitter? We can help you with that. Here's a quick rundown of some social media sites, including Twitter, and how to sign up.

Now go enjoy some time with family and friends this holiday season, and remember all you have to be thankful for.
