Corn Protein Makes Low-Cost Wax Coating

USDA-ARS scientists have found an inexpensive way to use a corn protein called zein as a replacement for wax on paper.

They formulated a zein-containing mixture that has good grease resistance and water barrier properties. The scientists see it as an alternative environmentally friendly coating that can be used on any packaging material that requires waterproofing.
