Over half of the 2012 corn crop has been planted. Fifty-three percent, to be exact. This is well ahead of the five-year average of 27%, and a big jump over last week's 28%. Iowa made the most progress, getting 50% of the crop planted, compared to having only 9% in last week.
Eight states have less than 50% of the corn crop planted: Colorado (22%), Michigan (28%), Minnesota (48%), Nebraska (44%), North Dakota (24%), Pennsylvania (27%), South Dakota (31%) and Wisconsin (18%).
Corn has emerged in all but two states, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Fifteen percent of the corn crop has emerged overall, well ahead of the 6% five-year average.
A fair amount of soybean planting progress was made in the last week. All states now have some beans planted, with an overall 12% completion rate. This is 6 points ahead of last week and 7 points ahead of the five-year average. The majority of states have less than 10% of the soybean crop planted. Mississippi, Arkansas and Indiana made the most soybean planting progress, jumping 19 and 17 points to 59%, 45% and 28% complete, respectively.
