This week, silage reports from the Northeast are included in the summaries as well. In the reports below, the managers of F.I.R.S.T. (Farmer's Independent Research of Seed Technologies) provide a weekly snapshot of how corn and soybeans are yielding. These managers conduct on-farm research trials from farms just like yours. Illinois North and North Central Tri-States
Corn hybrids were all standing well at the Winnebago, IL, field at harvest on Oct. 3. Average yield was 207.3 bu./acre on the early season test and 212.5 bu./acre on the full-season test.

Excess spring moisture delayed planting until May 5 at the Walnut, IL, site. Stalk qualities were starting to deteriorate at harvest on Oct. 4. The yield test average was 180.5 bu./acre on the early season site and 186 bu./acre on the full-season site.

The Warren, IL, plot received several heavy rains during the growing season, as well as strong winds. Pounding rain immediately after planting hurt germination on some of the hybrids. The yield test average was 180.2 bu./acre on the early season site and 187 bu./acre on the full-season site.

Indiana Central, Indiana North and Ohio West Central
The Windfall, IN, field experienced dry conditions in July and most of August. Average yield was 217.3 bu./acre on the early season test and 218.1 bu./acre on the full-season test.

A hot and dry June helped root depth on this crop at Danville, IN. August rains helped produce average yields of 183.7 bu./acre on the early season test and 190.6 bu./acre on the full-season test. Some stalk rot and gray leaf spot was present at harvest.

Hot and dry weather caused plant stress at LaCrosse, IN, but yields were above expectations. The average yield was 174.5 bu./acre on the early season test and 178.6 bu./acre on the full-season test.

The Spiceland, IN, location had a wet spring, but good weather from July through harvest helped produce an average yield of 211.2 bu./acre on the early season test and 204 bu./acre on the full-season test. Stalk rot and gray leaf spot were present at harvest on Oct. 5.

The Plumwood, OH, plot produced a good average yield of 227.1 bu./acre. At harvest stalk rot was present.

The average yield of 236.2 bu./acre was well above average for the Springfield, OH, location. This was attributed to good rains in July and August and minimal disease pressure.

Dry conditions after planting impacted emergence and the final stand at the Orient, OH, field. Late-season grass pressure also reduced the potential of this plot. Average yield was 144 bu./acre.

Iowa West Central and Iowa East Central
The Central City, IA, field had a rough growing season. The location had a wetter-than-normal spring, followed by wet and windy conditions during spraying season which delayed herbicide application. An August windstorm also caused some root lodging and down corn. The stress caused below-average yields of 173.7 bu./acre and 172.1 bu./acre for the early and full-season tests, respectively.

Near-perfect planting conditions and regular rainfall helped produce very good yields at the Earlham, IA, plot. The early season test averaged 217.6 bu./acre. The full-season test had an average yield of 216.4 bu./acre.

The Yale, IA, field experienced a wet spring, dry conditions in June and July and excess rain in August. Average yields were 190.6 bu./acre and 197 bu./acre for the early and full-season tests, respectively.

A 5-in. rain two days after planting flooded out one side of the early season test at the Manning, IA, location. A July hail storm also caused damage. Despite that stress, the plot grew well and yields were better than expected. Average yields were 210.4 bu./acre and 205..2 bu./acre for the early and full-season tests, respectively.

A wet early spring provided excellent growing conditions at the Columbus, NE, site until July 5. Very little rain fell in July, but 10 in. of rain fell in August. The average yield was 223.4 bu./acre on the early season site and 219.1 bu./acre on the full-season site. These are above the five-year average of 205 bu./acre on this farm site.

Timely rains all summer along with warm weather produced excellent yields for dryland corn at the Hartington, NE, site. The average yield was 191.8 bu./acre on the early season site and 181.6 bu./acre on the full-season site. Average full-season yields were 155 bu./acre and 153 bu./acre in 2005 and 2006, respectively.

F.I.R.S.T. SOYBEAN PROGRESS REPORT
The Grand Ridge, IL, field was planted May 8 and harvested Oct. 6. The average yield was 68.7 bu./acre, which was about 10 bu. above last year's yield at this location. Ample rainfall throughout the summer helped produce this excellent crop.

The Malta, IL, field had a below-average yield due to lack of rainfall at the right time. Average yield was 43.3 bu./acre, and many plants only had 1-2 pods/cluster.

The Walnut, IL, field had an average yield of 66 bu./acre, thanks to good rainfall. Tall soybeans caused some lodging, and white mold also affected some varieties.

Excess rain after planting hurt the germination at the Milledgeville, IL, field. The entire plot was lodged and matted at harvest. Average yield was 57.2 bu./acre.

Minnesota South Central and Minnesota Central
The Nicollet, MN, field had adequate rains early during the growing season, then experienced a dry spell from June through the first part of August. A 5-in. rain in mid-August helped boost the average yield to 64.2 bu./acre.

The Glencoe, MN, field had excellent growing conditions in May and early June. August also offered ideal weather with nice rains. Average yield was 54 bu./acre.

At Litchfield, MN, good early season growth along with rain in late August helped save yields. Average yield was 55.9 bu./acre. The field was sprayed for aphids.

The Clinton, MN, field had good growing conditions following planting, but dry and hot temperatures were experienced in July. Moderate rain in August and good subsoil moisture helped the crop produce a 54.4-bu./acre yield.

Pest pressure throughout the growing season at the Cottonwood, MN, field stunted the growth and yield of this test. Because the effects were not uniformly distributed across the field, none of the hybrids performed consistently and the data was rejected for this year’s report. This site will not be included in the calculation of regional average yields.

South Dakota East Central, South Dakota Northeast and South Dakota Southeast
The Humboldt, SD, plot was planted May 14. Planting conditions were favorable, but rainfall was scarce during June and July. In August, enough rain fell to help the soybeans fill pods. The site averaged 47.4 bu./acre.

Soil moisture was plentiful at the Parker, SD, plot at planting on May 15. Conditions were favorable most of the growing season, and August rains helped fill out the soybean pods. The site averaged 62.5 bu./acre. This was an above-average year at this location. Average yield at this site was 53.1 bu./acre in 2006 and 56.5 bu./acre in 2005.

Heavy rain in May and June caused flooding at the Cavour, SD, plot. The field showed uneven emergence and poor stands due to this excess moisture. However, yields were considered good despite the weather. The site averaged 53.5 bu./acre.

Planting conditions were wet in May at the Webster, SD, plot. In June and July conditions were drier and higher levels of aphids were noted. The site averaged 47.7 bu./acre.

Bath, SD, had excess rain prior to planting, followed by a dry summer. The field averaged 41.7 bu./acre. This was below the expected average annual yield of 45 bu./acre.

Pennsylvania Central and Pennsylvania Southeast
The three southeast Pennsylvania sites all experienced a good growing season with timely rains and adequate heat to produce a good crop. Hanover, PA, had an average yield of 23.3 tons/acre. Nottingham, PA, and Mount Joy, PA, averaged 27.7 and 32.1 tons/acre, respectively.

In central Pennsylvania, adequate rain at the Martinsburg test produced an average corn silage yield of 25.2 tons/acre. Similarly, Greencastle, PA, posted a yield of 22.2 tons/acre. This test was no-tilled into alfalfa sod. At Tyrone, PA, rain in early July saved the crop. The remainder of the growing season was dry. Average yield was 20.8 tons/acre. At New Bloomfield, PA, lack of rainfall in July and most of August caused small ear development and a yield of 19.4 tons/acre.
