Nancy and Jerry Ackermann farm near Lakefield, Minn. They use alfalfa in their crop rotation as a way to improve soil health. Nancy talks here about working with alfalfa, as well as the benefits they've seen in soil organic matter since including it in their crop rotation.
I found this video very interesting as we have seen increased organic matter from dropping hay in the rotation. After 10 yrs of No-till/Strip-till our tested organic matters have risen from 1-1.5% on our forest origin soils. to an average over 3. Is the alfalfa being fed and put back as manure ? With the crop removed where is the feed stock for organic matter generation coming from? High N/C sources for us just tend to mineralize.
