Last week I was in Spokane, Washington as part of Northeast Farm Credit’s 8th Annual Executive Producer Round Table. This year we had forty couples for three days. Some perspectives follow:

This year’s group worked on average 2845 hours per year on the farm and 322 hours in service outside the business. An astounding 38 percent worked more than 3500 hours per year on the farm. How do you compare?

One person on the producer panel had cut his fixed cost per acre in half through networking at the Texas A&M Agricultural Executive Program. He operates a farm in Idaho and shares a combine with producers in Nebraska and Iowa.

They have formed a limited liability company, and finance the combine through John Deere. Over the past years they have traded for a new combine each year.

One of the farm spouses related a story of a neighboring spouse whose husband had died. He managed the finances and checkbook. He suddenly died, and he had left a will. However, when the will was examined, the lawyer had not notarized it. Bottom line: She is without any cash for six months because of the legal oversight by the retired attorney who is sunbathing in Florida. The Devil is in the Detail.

I can’t wait until the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Kansas and Duke look tough!

At Home

Barbzilla’s husband, Jorge, is trimming out Frank Beamer’s new house, Virginia Tech’s football coach. Even in Blacksburg, the price of building a brand new house is outrageous! What is so nice about the house is that Frank Beamer has included rooms and a separate entrance for hosting his players in his own home. That’s real coaching!

Next week I am going to be in Oh Canada!
