New Stored Grain Protectant Effective Against Lesser Grain Borer
The U.S Environmental Protection
Agency has approved Storcide™ insecticide from Gustafson LLC for direct application onto stored grain and for use in grain bins and warehouses.
New Storcide insecticide is a grain and seed protectant that is effective against the lesser grain borer and other stored grain pests of wheat, barley, oats, rice and sorghum. Target pests include granary weevil, rice weevil, red flour beetle, confused flour beetle, saw-toothed grain beetle, Indianmeal moth, Angoumois grain moth, lesser grain borer and larger grain borer.
Storcide insecticide contains two active ingredients – cyfluthrin and chlorpyrifos-methyl – that work in tandem to protect stored grains against damaging attacks by target pests. A key benefit of the product is its safety to humans and animals. Grain that has been treated with Storcide may be immediately used for milling, baking and human consumption, as well as for use as animal feed.
"We have waited a long time for this registration and are excited about the opportunity to bring a new grain and seed protectant to market," says Glen Karaffa, stored grain products manager for Gustafson LLC.
Storcide is an excellent tool for use in an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. It is a low-use-rate product in a convenient, liquid formulation. The product mixes with water and can be accurately applied with Gustafson and other applicators.
"Storcide insecticide should always be used as part of a total program that includes thorough cleaning and treating of grain storage areas before storing grain," says Karaffa. " If grain is insect-infested,fumigation is required to control existing populations before treating with Storcide for residual control."
