What should be done to deal with gun issues?

After recent (and not-so-recent) school shootings, the public seems to be in an uproar over gun control. Both sides make valid points, but we want to know where you stand on the issue. Should the government ban weapons and guns and require mandatory background checks for ALL gun purchases? Or, does the issue lie in the realm of mental health and the lack of care available? Or, should the government stay out of it and just maintain the second amendment? Let us know where you stand on the issue of gun control (or lack thereof).

WE DON'T NEED GUN CONTROL. WE NEED PEOPLE CONTROL.

There are no assault weapons....only assault people. You can use any "tool" to assault an individual. Government impositions rarely if ever correct a problem in society. If any form of government needs to address this issue it should be state by state, however, NEVER infringe on our 2nd amendment or any other of our constitutional rights. BEWARE of the current administration in Washington DC. Williston, SC

We need to have God back in our homes, schools, ban abortion, sin and bad things will continue to happen but with God in our lives He will help us handle the bad things. Some say they do need God in their lives. If we put worshiping God on the same level as eating, how long would we exist without food like we like to without God. Keep praying.

Banning assault weapons and larger clips is not the answer to the problem. There are many partial reasons from God not part of many people's lives to video games. One of the largest problems comes from the media. For two weeks after the CT shooting-anytime I logged on to AOL-there was a new article about the shooter and his picture. If the media would concentrate on the victims in shootings and not glamorize the shooter the next wanna be shooter wouldn't be dreaming of his 15 minutes of fame.

The problem is not guns, but parents. Parents that rather than teaching their child how to be a productive, law abiding citizen chose to medicate them every time they show signs of hyperactivity or disobedience. Most of the individuals that commit these mass shootings are on some sort of medications

If you need more than 10 bullets to kill an animal you should not be hunting!!!

Anonymous

The second amendment has nothing to do with hunting and everything to do with protecting yourself from a government ouy of control

Anonymous
on Feb 6, 2013

The only reason they want more gun control is they are trying to supress us. They know without guns we would not have anything to use if an uprising becomes necessary. If people think it is to prevent mass shootings like we've seen lately, think again. abortion kills many, many more kids than those shootings.

Anonymous
on Jan 30, 2013

Who said anything about needing more than ten bullets to kill an animal? If I have to have a gun fight with two or three people that break into my home ten bullets will probably not be enough. I can have an extra clip or two but so can mass shooters, so why violate the second amendment to pass such a stupid law anyway.

I cannot understand why our govt chooses not to enforce existing statutes while trying to make new ones. We have a bunch of raving lunatics running our country, plus the few fairly smart ones have sold us out. The sad fact is that our best leaders don't want any part of this fiasco.

I can make this simple....Good OL fashion BUTT whoopin's for all these kids who need it and the parents are afraid of someone yelling child abuse. Its not abuse if done correctly, not in anger. People who are taught right, ussually live right.

Protect the second amendment

Anonymous
on Jan 27, 2013

2nd Amendment: A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the people's right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. There is nothing in this statement about hunting. There is nothing in this statement about home defense. It is ENTIRELY about the reaction of a free populace against a tyrannical government. Thos. Jefferson said: "Where the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Where the government fears the people, there is liberty."
George Mason was one of the lesser known Founding Fathers, but nonetheless the real impetus behind the Bill of Rights itself (the Bill of Rights was offered up by James Madison because George Mason left the Constitutional Convention in anger fearing too much power by the new, more centralized federal government). George Mason was asked what he meant by a militia; his answer was: "A militia, sir, is everyone but a few public officials..."

Finally, if we can remember one thing, it is this: The 2nd Amendment is what makes the other nine Amendments possible.

government tried to ban meth and heroin look how that worked
2011 crime stats all numbers approximate
300-350 deaths- assault weapons
650-700 deaths-hammers
950-1000 deaths-kitchen knives
12000+ deaths-alcohol related
195000 deaths-medical malpractice
but no one questions the government why pick on a black gun?

The people going after our guns have no problem killing babies in the womb. They are hypocrits, largely democrats, afraid of honest Constitution believeing, God fearing Americans, that want to protect America from a tyrannical Government. This is the purpose of the Second Amendment. God bless America.

To those who favor stricter government control of firearms, look how WELL they've handled these budget and debt problems we have. They would have difficulty organizing a 2-car funeral procession.

They should look first into banning violent "virtual reality" video games where kids(young adults) can kill as many people as they want. They sit in front of these games for hours on end so no doubt they have dificulty realizing what is real and what is not when they finally turn it off.
Banning guns of any kind will NOT fix the problem. It will only give the government more power to control our lives. Outlawing guns will not stop a "mad man" from killing!

Anonymous

Banning magazines and guns is not going to fix the problem. The first thing we need to address is mental illness and treatment. We also need to address the background check system and information sharing for health professionals. Guns are a tool not the cause of the problem. As far as banning and especially confiscation if you come to get mine you damn well better bring yours. MOLON LABE

Yes guns are not the problem. Society needs to understand that to have a healthy community it takes family, school, and church to work together to raise the child. For the most part society has been good at isolating the church and the family thinks the public school should do it all because they are too busy with their jobs. We spend so much time giving our kids everything they want (not need) We shelter them from harm and force them to be entertained by TV and computer. When I grew up we did not have a very good TV and definitely not a computer. We went out side, we rode bikes without helmets, we played board games, we did not have seatbelts in cars, we ate as a family. According to people today we should have suffered serious injuries and probably should be dead, however we survived. We did suffer some scratches from now to then, however we used our minds to build on common sense. Today's parents think their kids are protected from all harm and are entertained by TV. Their brains are so underdeveloped with common sense they could not make a educated decision if they wanted to. We have turned our kids into people without any brains and turned them into entitlists by giving them all the want without anything in return. They have no responsibility and have not learned responsibility. I am wondering when this society will learn we cannot totally protect anyone from harm, however we can provide them with a certain level of common sense and teach them responsibility. This will allow all to know when danger is present and act appropriately. I do think if the church had more of a role in people's lives a few more people will have a higher level of faith which would allow the teachings needed above and a certain level of Grace which would just make the world a better place to live.

I don't want to live out here in the country where I can't even see the neighbors house without guns for protection, If the criminals know that we have turned in our guns, we would be an easy mark for them in come out and do as they please.

We need to identify people that are mentally unstable and need help. Let's face it, there are people in our society that should not be part of the mainstream. We need facitities and institutions for certain people to be helped, treated if possible, or maintained in a controlled environment.

We need skilled parenting back in the families, including GOD coming first, family time, a lot less media trash exposure, love and tough love. Start at the root of the problem!

Anonymous
on Jan 26, 2013

In many states, people who have concerns about someone else's mental abilities are significantly limited on what they can do to seek/secure mental health assistance for someone else. If that person does not have a significant mental health history, there are limited options. In at least one state a judge has stated that a person has the right to be as crazy as they want to be unless or until they pose a threat to themselves or someone else, unfortunately, that may be too late. The pendulum has swung from when someone could be committed to a mental health facility for very minimal reason 50 to 70 years ago to today when someone can exhibit significant symptoms on instability over a period of time but because they have not committed an act of significant aggression, very little can be done to assist those individuals to get the help or assistance that could benefit them. There needs to be some mechanism to allow contacts to be made so that individuals could be observed to determine if they could benefit from mental health assistance. Also, removing guns from the general populace will not prohibit "criminals" from having guns. Criminals will always be able to access guns.

Anonymous

The problem comes in everything we enact that makes it tougher on the law abiding makes it easier for the criminals. I am sure the criminals want the toughest controls possible as they ignore them anyway.

Stay out of it the country is in a big enough mess without getting involved. What should be done is harsher jail time for convicted and no early release.

Anonymous
on Jan 26, 2013

Background checks are a no brainer. This should be done with any gun purchase whether it be at a dealer or at a gun show. Banning specific guns won't change anything. If someone is intent on harming others they will use whatever is available to them. Our country has drifted too far from common sense and our law makers think that new laws make things better. This should be obvious that new laws don't make criminals stop their actions, it just means that when they do committ a crime they break more laws. We need to get back to the basics of how life was when God was part of our daily life. People knew right from wrong and crimes were met with approaite punishment, not suspended jail time. Time out doesn't work for kids and it won't work for adults either. Let's get real and quit skirting around the underlying problems, background checks for all gun sales and real punishment for real crimes.

Anonymous
on Jan 26, 2013

At the time the Constitution was written, "militia" was used to define civilians organized as a fighting force. By definition, then, the Second Amendment would apply to individual ownership of firearms, as those individuals may be called upon to defend a community.

"Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man against his own bosom? Congress shall have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birth-right of an American ... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state governments, but where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the People."
— Tench Coxe, 1788.
