While the cotton is still maturing in the field and soybeans are being harvested, one more field activity is happening: tillage. In the fields that have been harvested already, strip tillers work the ground prior to fertilizer application. The ground is still soft so now is a prime time to get this work started. During the dry season, the ground will get hard, making it will be impossible to pull anything through the field. Once the strips have been tilled, P and K and other micronutrients will be applied in-furrow during the dry season, then plant right on top of it when planting season comes round.
Tyler discusses more of the benefits of strip tillage that is currently being done in the field. The strip tiller is working approximately 12" down into the soil profile, creating a nice, loose channel for fertilizer and a place for planting when the time comes. Global Ag Farms would be applying fertilizer right now, however it won’t arrive for another 60 days or so, so they’re taking advantage of a softer soil profile and completing strip tillage ahead of time.
