Farmers are starting to see their early planting come to fruition, as 9% of the corn crop is now emerging from the soil. This is well ahead of the 2% five-year average. Texas and Tennessee are seeing the most green with 53% and 61% of their corn crops out of the ground, respectively. North Carolina has nearly half of their crop emerging, and a third of the corn crop is popping up in Kentucky. Only Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin have yet to see corn emerge.
The overall corn crop is just over ¼ planted at 28% on average, 13 points ahead of the five-year average, and 11 points ahead of just last week. States with less than 10% of the crop in include Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota and Iowa. Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska and Pennsylvania all moved into double-digits progress-wise and have between 10% and 15% of their corn crops in. North Carolina made the most progress in the last week, going from 54% of the crop in April 15 to 79% of the crop in by April 22.
Soybean planting has started across the country. The crop is now on the board with 6% planted overall, 4 points ahead of the five-year average. Mississippi leads the pack with 40% of its crop in, followed by Louisiana at 33% planted and Arkansas at 28%. Indiana has 11% of its soybean crop in, while Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio and Tennessee all have less than 10% of their soybean crops in the ground.
Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin still don't have beans planted, but that's on par with the five-year average.
