Syngenta Receives South Korean Import Approval for the Breakthrough Agrisure Viptera™ Trait

Syngenta Seeds, Inc. today announced it has received import approval from South Korea for products carrying the Agrisure Viptera trait. The Agrisure Viptera trait features a new mode of action in corn to deliver the most complete control of a broad spectrum of above-ground corn pests, including corn earworm, black cutworm and fall armyworm. In field trials, the Agrisure Viptera trait demonstrated outstanding control of corn earworm, including a yield advantage of up to 32 bu/A under very heavy corn earworm pressure1.

The Agrisure Viptera trait features Vip3A, the industry‘s first vegetative insecticidal protein, or VIP. Vip3A has demonstrated highly effective multi-pest control of corn earworm, fall armyworm, Western bean cutworm, black cutworm, dingy cutworm, stalk borer and sugarcane borer, among others. Syngenta estimates damage from these pests costs U.S. corn growers 238 million bushels of corn and $1.1 billion in annual yield and grain quality losses2.

“South Korea is a major importer of U.S. corn, and approval of the Agrisure Viptera trait represents a significant milestone,” said David Morgan, president of Syngenta Seeds.

Beyond in-field yield and grain quality reductions, the damage from the multi-pest complex also allows spores from fungi to gain access, proliferate and produce mycotoxins. Finding mold and mycotoxins in corn can be financially and emotionally devastating, as grain with concentrations above acceptable thresholds has limited to no market options.  In research conducted by Texas A&M University and Syngenta, the Agrisure Viptera trait demonstrated an ability to significantly reduce development of molds and mycotoxins³.

Corn hybrids containing the Agrisure Viptera trait will be available for planting in the U.S. in 2011. The technology was previewed in select areas this past summer at Syngenta field trials.

In the U.S., the Agrisure Viptera trait and trait stacks have received approval from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), completed consultation with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and received deregulation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The single Agrisure Viptera trait also is approved for cultivation in Canada and Brazil, and the Agrisure Viptera 3111 trait stack and Agrisure Viptera 3110 trait stack are approved for cultivation in the U.S. and Canada. The single trait is approved for import to Australia, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea. In addition, the Agrisure Viptera 3111 trait stack and the Agrisure Viptera 3110 trait stack are approved for import into Canada, Japan, Mexico and the Philippines.

Agrisure Viptera technology is available in hybrids from the Syngenta seed brands of Garst®, Golden Harvest® and NK® and will also be made available through licensing agreements with more than 150 local and independently owned seed companies.
