    On July 11, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a new farm bill (HR-262) by a margin of 216-208, with all voting Democratic House members and 12 Republican House members opposing the legislation. Last month, the U.S. House voted down another version of the new Farm Bill by a vote of 195-234, with opposition from both parties.     Farm Bill Likely to Take Back Seat 1

    Congress seems unlikely to pass a new five-year farm bill any time soon with talks on the federal budget and the U.S. debt ceiling likely to be lawmakers’ main focus in coming months. The deadline for raising the U.S. debt ceiling apparently will be pushed back to May 19 as the U.S. House of Representatives passed a temporary suspension of that ceiling last week and the Senate is expected to pass the same measure this week....More

    As part of the congressional agreement that was passed to avoid the fiscal cliff, the 2008 Farm Bill was extended through the 2013 crop year, and will now expire on Sept. 30, 2013.
