SHOREVIEW, Minn. – Knowledge is the coin of the realm for today’s sophisticated growers, who recognize that incremental changes in crop inputs and placement strategies have the potential to turn good yields into great yields. And thanks to more than 2 million points of national, regional and local agronomic data available on AnswerPlot.com, growers now have a comprehensive resource to turn to as they contemplate cropping decisions for the 2012 growing season.
AnswerPlot.com is the online arm of the Winfield Solutions Answer Plot® program, through which growers in 33 states can compare products from top companies such as Dekalb, Monsanto, CROPLAN GENETICS® and Syngenta, see data on CROPLAN GENETICS® seeds, DEKALB® products, Asgrow®, NK® and Mycogen®, while gaining insights on macro and micronutrients, fungicides,, seed treatments, crop protection, and seed population strategies at more than 180 Answer Plot® sites.
Each site covers 15 to 20 acres and serves as a local crop research center for area growers. Findings From 2011 Season According to Answer Plot® program director Kevin Eye, some of the most compelling findings from this year’s locations focused on seed performance. “We studied more than 60 corn hybrids and 60 soybean varieties in more than 4,000 side-by-side comparisons,” he explained. On a nationwide average, based on the information obtained from our Answer Plot® locations, he added, Winfield Solutions’ CROPLAN GENETICS® corn and soybean seeds outperformed similar hybrids from Pioneer by an average of four bushels per acre for soybeans and eight bushels per acre for corn.
Answer Plot® program data highlight the variability experienced by growers throughout the year and the corresponding dramatic swings in production. For example, Kansas was home to both the highest and lowest corn yields.
The Answer Plot® site in Brewster recorded yields of 342 bushels per acre, while the site in Wamego reported yields of just 36 bushels per acre. “The 2011 growing season was a challenging one for many growers—thanks to extreme weather conditions experienced by much of the country during the spring and summer—and it was reflected in this year’s yield data,” said Eye, adding that nearly one-quarter of growers had severely wet conditions, while another quarter dealt with extreme drought. “The wide variations in yield recorded at this year’s Answer Plot® sites make for valuable data growers can use to plan next year’s crop.
“Our program helps growers determine the best crop management practices aimed to deliver maximum results from their field, whether it involves protecting high yield areas or attempting to increase yields on their toughest acres,” said Eye. “We’re dedicated to helping growers get the most from every acre, which includes arming growers with information on all aspects of crop production.”
