U.S. To Press China On GMO Rules
U.S. government officials are in Beijing this week, seeking answers to persistent questions about China’s new rules on the importation of genetically modified foods.
A USDA spokesman said the team will consist of officials from USDA, the U.S. Trade Representative’s office and the State Department.
We would be surprised if the U.S. team were to get immediate answers to most of its questions. Chinese officials don’t seem to be yet in complete agreement on what their own rules mean.
However, with President Bush set to visit Beijing in late February, the pressure is on the Chinese to clarify things soon.
