The U.S. House of Representatives has approved $4.468 billion for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is $568.2 million over the President's budget request and $72.8 million below FY 2001. Included in this package was $3.72 million for evaluating the modernization needs of the Upper Mississippi region.
In testimony before the House and Senate Appropriations Committees, Chief of Engineers, Lieutenant General Robert Flowers, indicated his intention to provide Congress with a report by July 2002 on this important issue.
The Corps of Engineers has been working with other federal agencies to address the comments by the National Academy of Sciences and determine the means by which to reach this objective.
