Voters Reject Proposition 37

Voters have rejected Proposition 37 in California, the flawed and misguided food labeling measure. The No on 37 campaign, a coalition of family farmers, doctors, scientists, researchers, Nobel Prize winners, retailers, food companies, business groups, tax payer groups and community groups, said Californians saw through Prop. 37 and rejected the measure.

From the beginning, No on 37 allies argued that Prop. 37 was more than just a simple labeling measure, pointing out that it was misleading, costly and unnecessary based on the science of genetically engineered foods.

“California voters clearly saw through Prop 37 and rejected higher food costs, more lawsuits and more bureaucracy,” says Henry I. Miller, M.D., a fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution and the founding director of the FDA’s Office o f Biotechnology (1989-1993). “Food labeling policy should be based on logic and science, not fear. Leading scientific organizations have all agreed that foods containing genetically engineered ingredients are safe and are not materially different from their traditional counterparts. We’re glad the voters rejected this misleading, costly and unnecessary measure.”

Nearly every daily newspaper in California urged a “No” vote on Prop. 37. In fact, more than 40 California newspapers recommended No on 37.

“Grocery retailers would have been hit the hardest by passage of Prop. 37, through more lawsuits, more bureaucracy and higher costs,” says Ronald Fong, president and CEO of the California Grocers Association. “These costs would have been passed on to consumers in the form of higher grocery bills.”

“California family farmers can breathe a little easier today,” says Jamie Johansson, an Oroville farmer who grows olives to make olive oil. Johansson is also second vice president of the California Farm Bureau Federation. “Prop. 37 would have imposed costly new regulations on California family farmers that no other state requires, putting us at a competitive disadvantage. Thankfully voters understood this and rejected Prop. 37 and voted instead to protect family farmers.”

Genetic alteration is so entangled with our biological imperative that to say with such a cavalier note that there is no effect of GMO to our health is clearly dillutional. Once again money trumps national health.

Why do nearly all other modern nations reject GMO foods into their food supply, and we not only allow it- but allow it to be secretive as well. I am so sorry for all the developing American children whoes health will be effected because they are especially vulnerable to GMO foods. Just give it 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 years and then ask yourself why is it that tumors, cancerns, allergies, food sensitivities and digestive diseases are ramport. And how will we cover all that increase in medical expenses. GMO are not safe over the long term !! Not to mention what they are doing to farmer's livelihoods ! Putting seed production in the hands of BIG chemical companies like Monsanto. Monsanto and Dupont care about making money for thier company- that is why they spend millions fighting prop 37 and spread lies about the proposition.

Is your food a pesticide-producing GMO? Pesticides are toxic. Are GMOs really safe? I dunno.. LETS ASK THE CEOs OF THE BIOTECH INDUSTRY IF THEY FEED THEIR CHILDREN GMO FOOD.

This is for the comment gatekeeper:

Why do you support GMOs? well.. probably because you're employed by a biotech industry giant. Or perhaps you're just an apologist blogger.. idk. One thing I DO know: People have the right to know what their food contains. People have a right to know that GMO food tests abroad show that after two generations, lab mice are completely sterile. Perhaps GMO has more to do with eugenics than making food more widely available. I hope you don't feed your children GMO ingredients...

I think the comments here ring true to those who personally care about personal health. Prop 37 will prevail eventually. May need rewriting, but eventually supporters of the No on GMO movement will educate the ignorant to the point that money will not mean much. Especially when we can show them the true stats on damages the body takes with GMO products in their food Pyramid. Healthy living for intelligent people. No on GMO's.

Why do you need to keep it a secret? Put a list of GMO products on the web let us sort it out.

Both myself and my family plant and consume GMO grain. We sell it on the world market and others consume it. As far as making more money from GMO seeds I am not sure? Gmo seeds because of their make up produce at least 10% more on each acre. Think! take 10% of all the food that is grown from GMO seed. Less food equals higher prices. For all my life farmers world over have prayed for some one else in the farming world to have a crop failure so that they could get a decent price for their farm products and a living for a year or two until over production took over again and terrible prices returned. I do feel for those farmers in south USA having the terrible drought BUT it has been good for my bottom line.

Well, Bill, that about says it all. Your economic analysis and care for your fellow farmers, family and the rest of us sounds foolishly shortsighted. If you don't realize that most GMO corn and soy are NOT feeding people, but used in destructive industries, maybe you should try the Reality Channel. Is this desperate selfishness the true reason American farms are failing?
