The National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) is gearing up for a strong campaign for commercialization of biotech wheat, thanks to financial backing of more than $175,000 from state growers associations and others.
Meeting at Commodity Classic in Anaheim, CA, NAWG's Wheat Industry Biotech Council (WIBC) is heading an effort to hopefully enable wheat growers to reap the benefits corn and soybean producers enjoy in planting biotech seed, says Dana Peterson, NAWG chief executive officer.
WIBC has plans to educate food manufacturers, retailers, consumers and others about the benefits of biotech wheat in feeding the world's growing population, she indicated during discussions at the NAWG research and technology committee meeting at the Anaheim Convention Center.
"We are trying to bring forward the commercialization of biotechnology in wheat production," she told committee members and others attending the session. She said outreach to food manufacturers, retailers, consumers and non-governmental agencies is essential in educating how biotech wheat is safe for humans.
